I was drafted into the Royal Artillery in 1955, trained at Oswestry & Rhyl.
During my training the guard was tied up by the IRA. It later turned
out to be a 2nd. Lieutenant who had been celebrating his demob. I believe
he was cashiered from the army. I was later attached to the 16LAA regiment
which was posted to Cyprus in either late 1955 or early 1956 for the
Suez crisis where we later served as internal security during the EOKA
situation. I remember our new barracks being blown up while a bunch
of us was at the garrison theatre. As a radio operator I spent my final
months as a national serviceman manning a radio at a police station
in Larnaca. |
